The Commission of Legislation and Justice of the City Council of Belo Horizonte approved the bill that proposes the city as the capital of Bitcoin. The initiative, led by Councilman Vile Santos (PL/MG), aims to boost the local economy through the adoption of cryptocurrency.

On the afternoon of Tuesday (18), the BH Chamber took a significant step in approving Bill 124/2025, which declares the municipality as the capital of Bitcoin.

The proposal was analyzed by the Chamber’s Legislation and Justice Commission (CLJ) and received a favorable opinion on its constitutionality, legality and regulation.

The vote had the unanimous approval of the members of the Commission. In addition to Vile Santos, councilors Michelly Siqueira (PRD), Fernanda Pereira Altoé (New), Edmar Branco (PCdoB) and rapporteur Uner Augusto (PL/MG) participated in the decision.

The Bill 124/2025

The proposal, presented by Councilman Vile Santos (PL/MG), aims to encourage the use of cryptocurrency in both public services and local commerce, fostering the digital economy.

According to the project, the use of bitcoin will be optional. To enable payments, the city must hire a specialized company, which will convert the bitcoin values ​​to reais. In addition, the initiative includes educational campaigns and incentive programs for merchants to adopt Bitcoin as a form of payment.

Establishments that join the program will be highlighted in local campaigns, aiming to promote innovation and financial freedom in the municipality. The proposal suggests the use of blockchain technology to increase transparency in the city’s financial operations.
